Day 2: Nairobi City Tour
Kenya is a holiday paradise with its numerous parks and wildlife refuges. But many visitors are unaware that its capital, Nairobi, also provides some of the most unique travel experiences in East Africa. Just minutes from the city center you can get up close and feed a giraffe, watch baby orphan elephants play in the mud, and visit the legendary home of Karen Blixen, creator of “Out of Africa.” There is so much to see and do in this full-day adventure around Nairobi.
Karen Blixen:
Made famous by the hit movie “Out of Africa” starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, this plantation homestead is where that story began. We’ll start our tour visiting this expansive farmhouse and grounds where Karen Blixen established a coffee plantation and spent time with her lover, the English hunter, Denys Finch-Hatton. Set at the foot of the Ngong Hills, the plantation was where Blixen chronicled her time in colonial Africa in her renowned literary works. We’ll visit the rooms where she lived and worked. On display – relics from her life as well as props from the legendary movie. We’ll also learn more about Kenya’s colonial history.
David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage:
Our next stop is truly the most unique animal care center in the world. Where else can you see dozens of baby elephants being fed from giant milk bottles right before you? And then after the feeding, watch the elephant babies roll about in the mud, playing, frolicking like young children everywhere.
This world-renowned sanctuary rescues orphaned elephants throughout Africa and hand raises them with expertise and love. The Sheldrick Family has been taking in and caring for these
Orphaned babies for over forty years. Over 200 have now been rescued and you can experience up close the expressions of compassion and caring in this very special place. Lunch at Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. Then it’s on to the Giraffe Centre.
Giraffe Centre:
Here at the Giraffe Centre, you can climb up the feeding tower and hand feed a food pellet to an inquisitive giraffe. Some lucky visitors have been known to get a giraffe kiss! The Centre is a refuge for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. Here we’ll learn about this beautiful species at the special Information Centre. You may also find yourself surrounded by dozens of schoolchildren, as this is a favorite outing for Kenya’s youngsters.
Dinner: Royal Private Safaris will treat you on dinner at Movenpick Revolving Restaurant.
Accommodation: Movenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi
Day 3 & 4
You will be met with a warm welcome at Nairobi International Airport before being transferred to the domestic airport to catch your 12-seater light aircraft flight to Samburu National Reserve. As you approach Samburu, watch in complete awe as you gaze down at this true wilderness area, dotted with rocky outcrops and catch a glimpse of snow-capped Mount Kenya. As your plane lands on the airstrip, you may even spot a giraffe or two looking curiously over at you. Your safari starts from the moment you land as you are game driven up over the rocky outcrops where you will find Samburu Sopa Lodge, your base for the next 3 nights.
After having an ice-cold fruit juice, which is very much welcomed in the dry heat of northern Kenya, you will go out on your first full game drive. Your expert guide has the knowledge of the land. Here wildlife is fascinating. Let your excitement build and feel the wind in your hair as you journey into the reserve in your open safari vehicle and encounter your first wildlife sightings. Adrenaline rushes through you as you approach a herd of elephants, ambling majestically across the riverbank, with Samburu’s red earth mountainous scenery in the background. You will stop for a sundowner; gin and tonic in hand as you step out the vehicle overlooking a waterhole, the sun beginning to set.
